Rich in emotion and fueled with suspense, See Me reminds us that love is sometimes forged in the crises that threaten to shatter us.
They seem further away than they did just a couple of years ago. When I wrote See Me , my singular goal was to surprise and delight readers. See Me in some ways, is similar to The Guardian and Safe Haven , in that the novel evolves from a simple love story to a story with thriller-like elements.
Also, the characters of See Me are very different — perhaps even more flawed — than characters in my previous novels.
Situated on the southeastern coast of North Carolina, Wilmington is a charming port city near the Cape Fear Coast beach community. Rich in naval history, Wilmington is a modern city with so much to see and do; from a WWII battleship to a Hollywood movie production studio, cobblestone streets with horse-drawn carriages to music festivals, history museums to contemporary art galleries, elegant restaurants to welcoming nightspots, Wilmington has something for everyone.
I think most authors are. Covers are incredibly important; ideally, they are recognizable to fans at a glance while enticing to new readers as well.
And yes — I agreed with the fan choice for the cover of See Me. Characters in my novels — including Colin and Maria — are created and developed as the story itself unfolds, until they become their own unique people, with their own voice, back-story, thought processes and beliefs.
For See Me , I wanted a moderately sized coastal city, one with a thriving historic district, a university, varying neighborhoods, and a city with much to offer in the way of restaurants, gyms, and things to do.
I started listening to it at work yesterday and when I got home, I picked up the book and kept reading until the very last page.
I don't know why I waited so long to read it because yesterday, I could not put it down, and I am still reeling with excitement on how wonderful the book is.
I have seen multiple movies based off of his books, and for me, Nicholas Sparks is synonyms with tear jerker, bawling my eyes out for days on end, my heart being ripped out and shred into three million pieces.
So needless to say, that's what I was expecting with See Me. I did not shed a single tear with this book, but not because I'm heartless, but because this book is suspenseful; it's like a mystery and a romance and so many things.
There are so many layers to this novel, it's just brilliant! I really loved that it wasn't pure romance because I thought that's what I wanted, but it really wasn't.
I wanted this. This book held so many surprises and was so wonderfully written. I feel so lucky that I have read so many brilliant books lately.
My LOVE shelf is quickly filling up with more and more books! Sep 27, Denise rated it liked it.
This is a very different Nicholas Sparks book! When I began reading See Me, I was disappointed in the story. Nicholas Sparks' new style was interesting but not great for me.
The love connection between Colin and Maria lacked real feeling and appeared unlikely. See Me is definitely my least favourite NS read but it kept me engaged until the last chapter.
Sep 18, Giselle rated it really liked it Shelves: favorite , fiction , suspense-thriller , well-written , romance , dark , nicholas-sparks , adult-fiction.
Full review to come. Sep 20, N. May 29, Mary rated it did not like it. Worst book from Nicholas Sparks ever. And worst book I've read in some time.
I've been a fan of Nicholas Sparks for his previous works but there were so many places this went wrong.. Second, the dialogue, especially Colin's.
No one talks like that, especially a testosterone-laden man. Third, the detailed descriptions.
At times, I literally said aloud, "enough already, we get it! This was likely exacerbated by the fact that I was listening to this as an audiobook and couldn't skim past the protracted and extraneous narratives.
Finally, the plot line. I realize this is fiction but this is so far from plausible that instead of being a romantic thriller, it was merely irritating.
The combination of over the top characters and contrived situations made it hard to enjoy the story. When I wrote See Me, my singular goal was to surprise and delight readers.
Frankly, it seemed you were just trying too hard to churn out View 1 comment. Jul 09, Jess rated it did not like it. Nicholas Sparks is my favorite author but this just may be my least favorite of his.
See Me is a departure from the tear-inducing novels that Sparks typically writes and I appreciated the mystery, thriller and suspense angles.
While I pieced together things, thanks to some carefully placed clues I nonetheless enjoyed both the characters and the twists.
These two are opposites, and I loved the slo See Me is a departure from the tear-inducing novels that Sparks typically writes and I appreciated the mystery, thriller and suspense angles.
These two are opposites, and I loved the slow-paced romance. Colin Hancock is not your typical bad boy. He has anger issues and has made some sad choices in the past.
However, when we meet Colin he is well on his way to improving himself. He is impulsive and flawed and while I did not agree with everything Colin did, I held to the fact that his intentions are honorable.
Thankfully, we see growth in this quiet, damaged hero. Colin is the type of character you will either like or struggle to find a connection to.
Having a sensitive son who speaks few words, made it easy for me to identify with Colin, although I abhorred his violent nature.
She has recently moved back to her hometown and is lonely and deeply dissatisfied with her current employment situation. Maria was a bit of a contradiction at times.
She is intelligent, educated and unwilling to settle, but sometimes she annoyed me with her behavior. Thankfully she was strong when it came to Colin and refused to short change herself.
Secondary characters included friends, family and the law. They all added an interesting mix to the story. Friends and family grounded the characters and created normalcy against the suspenseful plot.
A detective who hounds Colin provided tension. I worried he would royally screw up his chances. Questions of mental stability made our villain scary and unpredictable.
Subtle threads of prejudice and preconceived conceptions were weaved throughout and gave the reader food for thought in a natural showing not telling way.
The romance while present was secondary to the intense action. I loved the slow-build but felt it got a little lost in the middle.
Their connection felt realistic and I appreciated that they found growth from within because of their interaction. Plot twists, action scenes and near death experiences ramped up the tension as the story progressed.
Sparks added red herrings and clues along the way. For me the clues revealed things to quickly and made the tale predictable.
His pacing was well done and I didn't feel the urge to speed up the audio. This review was originally posted on Caffeinated Book Reviewer Mar 31, Alaina rated it liked it Shelves: contemporary , romance , march-challenge , chick-lit , fiction.
God damn you Nicholas Sparks! Then it ripped out my heart, stabbed it repeatedly, and then stomped on it a couple of times just for fun. Seriously, if I never read the last couple of chapters..
I would be completely fine. Yet here I am.. This book followed Colin, a 28 year old, with a second chance in life training to be a teacher. Now I get teachers all the credit that they deserve..
It's also not one I wou God damn you Nicholas Sparks! It's also not one I would have. I'm not a people person and if I get sass.. Just not in a nice way.
Long story short.. I'm a bitch and I'm a bigger bitch when someone constantly pushes my buttons. Back to this book.
I thrived on it! Then of course, Nicholas does his thing, and stuff starts happening. Maria has secrets that are sort of coming out..
Then you find out there was murder and everything.. I feel like this book was way too short.. Not the pages that basically broke my spirit.
I'm so emotionally tired after this book.. I need more wine to cope with this. Or sleep.. Feb 14, Kristy rated it liked it. As usual, the story is good, but his way of telling it is just This one had more of a mystery-romance vibe going on, so it veered a little different than most of his other books that I've read.
All in all, I enjoyed it. I'm not raving about it, but i wouldn't try to deter an well, at this point I'm beginning to wonder if Nicholas Sparks just writes the books to be made into movies?
I'm not raving about it, but i wouldn't try to deter anyone from reading it either. And, I never get the 'who-done-it' right, but I guessed this one pretty early on : Bonus points for me.
Spoilers ahead: I would have liked more details of the actual case that causes all this ruckus Just gross. That epilogue really drew me in. It would have been awesome to have a few more of those Stalker perspectives throughout.
Also, this one didn't have a ton of cheesy moments, which is great! I'm embarrassed by how much I enjoyed this. Part mystery, part romance, it was completely enjoyable from start to finish.
First things first, it took me an embarrassingly long time to read See Me. This was no fault of the book, but the fact that I soon got distracted with a new Kindle I own See Me in paperback kept me from giving the novel the full attention it deserved.
Now that I've reached the end, I wish I had finished this book sooner! The two main protagonists, Maria and Collin's lives are thro First things first, it took me an embarrassingly long time to read See Me.
The two main protagonists, Maria and Collin's lives are thrown together when Maria's younger sister, Serena, sets them up. As they begin to develop feelings for one another, Maria's life becomes endangered due to someone's hard feelings from a case she worked on at her previous law firm.
Will Maria's life--let alone her budding relationship with Collin--survive the threats of her stalker?
To avoid spoilers, I'll now review the highlights of the novel: The Thriller Aspect : Nicholas Sparks is a world-renowned romance novelist, but he's only written a couple other books with thriller aspects Safe Haven and The Guardian , which are two of my favorites.
See Me was as equally well-written in terms of suspense, and the mystery element of identifying Maria's stalker kept me guessing throughout the book.
I highly encourage Mr. Sparks to continue to experiment with thriller romances! The Characters : At the beginning, I found Collin hard to relate to, but as his past was revealed, I soon came to love his characterization.
Maria is a very relatable protagonist, and I loved her relationship with her sister, Serena. Even the secondary characters had infectious personalities!
Maria--basically a model citizen--had to come to terms with and accept Collin's rebellious and crime-ridden past.
Collin more than redeemed his past mistakes and sacrificed everything in order to protect Maria, which was both adorable and endearing. I read most of the novel during Hurricane Florence which devastated Wilmington, so it was nice to read about the city in a pleasant light.
Overall, I highly enjoyed this novel and am always eager to read more by Mr. May 23, Marie-Josee Saumer rated it it was amazing.
This is a novel that I wanted to keep reading, I did not want it to end. I have so many questions about the future of the story that I feel there should be a second novel.
Here is a point form list of some of my questions: - Will Colin ever propose to Maria? And will they have kids?
And if so? Does he actually become a teacher? I felt like he would succeed working with the law, he had some pretty bad ass skills, he outsmarted the po This is a novel that I wanted to keep reading, I did not want it to end.
I felt like he would succeed working with the law, he had some pretty bad ass skills, he outsmarted the police officers - How does Maria cope with all that has happened?
I have to say I loved loved loved reading this novel, Nicholas Sparks really outdid himself with this one. It is now one of my favourites from him, amongst other of course.
I could honestly go on about this novel, however I don't want to spoil it for other readers and I want to keep my review short ans sweet.
I do recommend this novel to others and I would read it again in a heartbeat. May 14, Lexy rated it it was amazing. I thought this book was good.
Jun 10, Gabby rated it liked it Shelves: 3-star-books , audiobooks-i-listened-to , romantic-suspense , reviewed , adult , contemporary , disappointed , read-in , romance , lost-interest.
I used to love Nicholas Sparks books when I was in high school but recently I've become annoyed with how repetitive and cliche his books are.
The romance felt rushed and forced and insta-love like. I related to Maria at times with h 2. I related to Maria at times with her passion to succeed and her lack of a social life, but other than that she was just an okay female protagonist.
Colin's character was likeable at times, but he drove me nuts with his "okay's" as a response to everything , like I GET IT , he's a man of few words, but it gets annoying after a while.
I did like the fact that he was more of a "bad boy" and had been in and out of prison which makes him different from Nicholas Sparks typical male love interests.
The first half of this book feels like a complete different book from the second half. The first half is a insta-love romance between Maria and Colin, and their romance is completely forgettable by the way, it's nothing special - I'm struggling to remember all their scenes right now.
Then the second half of the book becomes this ridiculous thriller with this guy stalking Maria and the sexual harassment going on in Maria's office.
I was just really bored and uninterested in the "suspenseful" scenes and I realized I didn't care much for the romance scenes either. One of the scenes I did enjoy though was the first time Colin and Maria meet, when he's helping her fix the tire and his face is all fucked up cause he was in a fight recently, and I just thought it was funny because she was afraid of him.
But to be honest that's all I'm really going to remember about this story unfortunately. Jul 09, Melissa rated it really liked it Shelves: , sweet , suspense-mystery-thriller , emotional.
He upped the suspense factor, which I actually found refreshing. I will definitely recommend this book to fiction, romance lovers.
